Elite Feet New Balance Team 2012

Like many runners, I enjoy running with others, competing with my peers, and the general sense of community that comes with our sport. I especially enjoy being part of a team. I have participated in several teams in my short running history. I was part of Brooks I.D. back in 2010, I have raced under the Running Fit 501 banner, and I will always be a part of the P.R. Fitness team in Ann Arbor, even though I am moving an ultramarathon’s distance up Interstate 75.

All top-shelf NB stuff for this team!
This year, however, is a little different. For 2012, by friend, guest blogger, and collaborator Ken asked me to be part of the 2012 Elite Feet New Balance Team. Ken explained that the team would be a great opportunity to get to know some talented runners, be a part of a fun community, be an ambassador for a great series of sponsors, and add a little extra something to the pot for my races in 2012. I was sold, and I agreed to join, even though I am a humble mid-packer (and rarely run high-profile road races).

Last night was the swag-fest meeting for the Team and we had a chance to get fitted for uniforms and all the rest  For someone like me, this was like a little leaguer being asked to join the Detroit Tigers. Despite Ken and “New Balance” Dave’s heartfelt assertion that this team is not all about results and is all about fun and representing our friends at Elite Feet, I couldn't help but notice that I was pretty much the sole little leaguer. I have labeled the fast people on the team for your reference (I am not in the photo, but I am taking it).

All that said, I couldn’t care less. Rather than my midpacker race results, I may have been chosen for my enthusiasm, my international blogging fame, and my undeniable good looks…but that is all good.  I was a little startstruck, to be honest.  I think I may have inadvertently blurted out my secret delusional intent to register for and attempt to complete a 100-miler this fall.  I may have eaten two slices of pizza. And two bread sticks. And yes, a glass of regular coke. I may have done these things, but no one made me feel anything but welcome and part of a great, great team.

Whether or not I am able to complete the kind of training necessary to attempt 100 miles, I am confident that each and every one of the guys and girls with the Elite Feet New Balance Team will be happily waiting for me at finish lines across Southeast Michigan with a smile and a pat on the back (probably after they have showered, napped, eaten, and collected their winning medals). Here is to 2012!
